Romantic Weekend

Whether you’re a honeymooner or a honeymooner at heart, our area boasts picturesque Town Commons, B&Bs with the charms of yesteryear, romantic restaurants for sharing quiet conversation, and opportunities to share in hiking, biking and strolling.

Start out your trip with a visit to the Johnny Appleseed Visitor Center in Lancaster, located betweens exits 35 and 34 on Rte. 2W. Interest in a quiet getaway might get you directed to visit the town of Petersham with its evocative Town Common and cemetery. With its charming B&Bs, quaint General Store (the creaky, wide-plank floors are free!) and antiquing possibilities, it is a tiny jewel. Stop for a late lunch or brunch at the Old Mill Restaurant just off Rte. 2 on Rte. 2A. in Westminster. Visit Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, in winter a skiers’ paradise, in summer and fall a destination for vista-lovers and festival-goers. For more inspiration, check out the Guide to Johnny Appleseed Country.

If you’re heading back east, be sure to visit the celebrated Nashoba Valley Winery in Bolton. Set on 52 acres of rolling farmland, the winery produces superior fruit wines and has earned wide acclaim as a pioneering winery, orchard and a destination for visitors seeking fine wines and food, all in a beautiful country setting. Look into a tour of the winery. When you’re ready for dinner, stroll over to the beautifully restored rustic farmhouse that is home to the romantic J’s Restaurant (reservations recommended). Featuring its own wines and imaginative cuisine inspired by farm-grown ingredients, J’s is Zagat-rated. This charming restaurant offers a number of rooms and a patio, all perfect for quiet conversation. The Gift Shop is a stop out of the Napa Valley, with displays offering the winery’s unique wines and stylish wine-related gift items, as well as hand-crafted beers and distilled spirits.

If you want to stay farther west, Maguire House B&B in Ashburnham is luxurious, elegant and peaceful. Built in 1764, this traditional B&B offers flowers, chocolates and complimentary refreshments. Located on 44 private acres, the spot promises breath-taking views of Mt. Monadnock and Mt. Watatic. A full New England breakfast awaits the hungry traveler.
